Bottom Line

The Trianon Hotel is a 52-room budget hotel located in a quiet area that's about a five-minute walk to Museumplein -- and its location is probably its best feature. Singles, Twins, Triples, and Quadruples have private bathrooms, along with TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning -- a big plus for a budget property. Some guests, however, have complained about wear-and-tear and a lack of cleanliness -- and there have been some past reports of bedbugs. It's a hotel of few frills -- a small lobby has a 24-hour reception desk, and a basic breakfast is available for a fee. Travelers might want to check out the nearby Flying Pig Uptown, a cheery, hostel with more extras, including a free breakfast and a bar.

Scene

No-frills budget hotel with shared and private rooms

The Trianon Hotel, with a small maze of corridors, few extra property features, and tiny guest rooms, evokes a typical Amsterdam budget property. The lobby, with gray wall-to-wall carpeting and white walls, is unremarkable. Green accents, though, add some color. A map of the city hangs above a bench with green pillows and a few stools, where guests can sit, although it isn't exactly a place to hang out. The elevator is tiny, and it doesn't go to the top floor. The 1920s-era brick building does retain a few nice features of that time, such as beautifully colored stained-glass windows that light up the stairwells. With its wide range of room types, from Singles to Quads to eight-bed shared dorms, the Trianon draws travelers from across the spectrum, including groups of friends, couples, families, and solo travelers.

Location

Conveniently located, about a five-minute walk to Museumplein

The Trianon Hotel sits on a peaceful street next to the Concert Hall, and is a five-minute walk to Museumplein, home to the Van Gogh Museum, the Royal Concertgebouw, and the Rijksmuseum. There are several shops and restaurants in the area. Hooftstraat, the popular upscale shopping street, is a five-minute walk and Vondelpark is a six-minute walk away. While the hotel is outside the Canal Ring, the Museumplein transit stop is only a three-minute walk away, and most sights are about 20 minutes away via public transit, including Dam Square. - 15-minute walk to Leinseplein nightlife

  • 12 minutes to the Flower Market via public transportation
  • 15 minutes to the Royal Palace via public transportation
  • 15 minutes to the Red Light district via public transportation
  • 16 minutes to the Anne Frank House via public transportation
  • 20 minutes to Dam Square via public transportation
  • 20 minutes to Nine Streets via public transportation
  • 22 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station via public transportation
  • 30 minutes to Schiphol Airport via public transportation (16-minute drive)

Rooms

Private rooms and shared dorms with AC and free Wi-Fi -- but complaints about cleanliness

The Trianon Hotel's 52 rooms include Singles, Doubles, Triples, and Quadruples, which are private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and eight-bed dorm-style rooms. Rooms are small and basic, with little in the way of decor. They vary significantly in details -- wood floors, carpeted floors, white walls, brick walls, and wood ceilings are all possibilities. Bathrooms also vary, with either white, black, or dated blue tiling. Cleanliness and wear-and-tear can be issues -- guests have complained about peeling paint and missing bathroom tiles. Some past guests have also reported bedbug incidents.Rooms include desks, TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms have showers and soap dispensers. Hairdryers are provided, and rooms are air-conditioned. But rooms lack mini-fridges, irons, and coffeemakers. The hotel sits above a Chinese restaurant, and some guests complain that the smell of food wafts into their rooms. Noise travels between rooms as well, although they're fairly well insulated from exterior noise.

Features

Breakfast service (for a fee), 24-hour reception, vending machines, and free Wi-Fi

This is a no-frills hotel, and its basic features reflect that. There's a reception area with a few places to sit, a soda machine, a candy/snack machine, and a coffee machine, plus a computer for guests' use. The front desk operates 24 hours, and Wi-Fi is free. Breakfast is served in a section of the restaurant next door, which can be reached through a door in the lobby, but it's limited and comes with a fee. Laundry service can be arranged.
