Bottom Line

People book a room at the St Christopher's at Winston Hotel to have fun and mingle with like-minded revelers. The property is set in a busy street just two blocks from the Red Light District, and is thus part of the throbbing heart of Amsterdam's nightlife. Eccentric and idiosyncratic guest rooms and dorms are generally clean and surprisingly quiet, though some noise is inevitable. Many hostels don't come this well presented and organized, but if you'd rather be a bit farther away from the edgier part of town, check out the Flying Pig Downtown.

Scene

Cannabis-friendly hostel with anarchic streak

The unassuming entrance of the St Christopher's belies the throbbing party heart within. A wall of speakers sets the tone upon entering, and anarchic and eccentric decor fills much of the property, from spray-can graffiti artwork to weird and wonderful paintings. The atmosphere at this cannabis-friendly property is relaxed and welcoming, aimed at younger travelers wanting to experience the hedonistic side of Amsterdam. During evenings the place really comes alive with the downstairs bar pumping out music and drink promos. The hotel's club also cranks it up for the all-night party crowd.

Location

Set on lively street, two blocks from Red Light District

Located on one of the major tourist stretches entering the Red Light District, the area is busy with foot traffic, taxis, and cyclists throughout the day and even more at night. Surrounded by cafes, bars, and clubs, fun-seekers don't need to go far to get their fix -- or even leave the hotel! Dam Square is also just a five-minute walk away, and Centraal Station, the city’s main railway terminal, is little more than ten minutes away on foot.

Rooms

Graffiti-artist decor in some rooms, but relatively clean and quiet

Both private rooms and dorms offer idiosyncratic decor options, ranging from huge rock star murals to riots of psychedelic neon -- no two rooms are the same. Furnishing is basic, and spaces are generally very clean. Fresh towels and linen is always provided. Most of the private double rooms include balconies that are all connected though partitioned, and dorms have four-bed and eight-bed options. Despite the locale and on-site club, many rooms escape noise. Still, earplugs might be a useful investment.

Features

Late-night clubbing and free breakfast

Belushi's, the hotel's bar-restaurant, serves cheap dishes from a fun menu. There’s a large ventilated room and terrace for those wanting to take advantage of the property's smoking-friendly policy. The on-site club has a busy calendar of events, most of which go on to the early hours. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the property and free breakfast is served each morning.
