Bottom Line

The NH Amsterdam Caransa is an upper-middle-range hotel with 66 rooms located directly on Rembrandt Square. Location is the main selling point of this modern property, which is within walking distance of all the major sights and has cafes and bars at its doorstep. The breakfast terrace overlooking the bustling, heavily touristed square is lovely in summertime, and guest rooms are sleek and clean with stocked minibars and coffeemakers -- though rooms facing the square can be noisy. Wi-Fi is free. The hotel's sister property, NH Amsterdam Schiller, is located on the opposite side of the square and has an historic brasserie serving lunch and dinner.

Scene

Simple and modern with pleasant pops of color and unique artwork

Geared to tourists who want to be in the center of the activity, NH Amsterdam Caransa sticks to a simple, efficient style, though maintains a certain coziness. The dark gray, modern building sits beside a pub and offers little in the way of decoration at the entrance. Inside, everything feels fairly new and modern, with colorful hanging lamps and paintings (some of which are for sale) throughout the hallways and stairwells. The narrow lobby and breakfast restaurant make use of warm wood paneling and furniture, dark carpeting, and pops of autumnal color. The breakfast room also has patterned wall panels, a striking chandelier, and floor-to-ceiling windows -- though their slight tint detracts a bit from the views of Rembrandt Square. The breakfast terrace is cozy and comfortable, with a wood deck and dark brown, wicker seating. Though guests tend to be out exploring during the day and night, the many cafes and pubs on Rembrandt Square mean this hotel is typically somewhat noisy.

Location

On Rembrandt Square within walking distance of everything

NH Amsterdam Caransa sits on Amsterdam's bustling Rembrandt Square, which is lined with cafes, restaurants, and tourist shops. This is part of the Canal Ring, and it's just to the south of the city's Old Center. Nearly everything can be reached on foot, and there's a tram stop opposite the hotel for those who tire of walking. Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, Leidseplein, and the Red Light District are all within 10 to 20 minutes on foot. Pretty Amstel Canal is just a few minutes' walk, as are the shops on Kalverstraat street.

Rooms

Very clean and unfussy, with soothing brown decor and large windows

Standard Rooms at the NH Amsterdam Caransa are clean and modern, with varying shades of brown on the walls, carpeting, and bedskirts. The pale, neon-green bed throws lend a welcome spot of brightness against white linens, as do simple white curtains against the large windows, some of which overlook the River Amstel or Rembrandt Square. All rooms have pillow menus, coffeemakers and tea kettles, safes, stocked minibars, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. All-white bathrooms have free toiletries and shower/tub combos. Junior Suites with city views and terraces are available. Rooms at the back of the property tend to be quieter; those overlooking the square can be noisy until late at night.

Features

Breakfast terrace, free Wi-Fi, and excellent location

For tourists who want to experience Amsterdam's bustling cafes and bars, the Rembrandt Square location of NH Amsterdam Caransa is tough to beat. Guests needn't go far for food, drink, or entertainment -- but on-site features are somewhat limited. The breakfast buffet is extensive and inclusive of different dietary types, though is not free (or cheap). There's a lovely breakfast terrace where guests can dine in warmer weather. Wi-Fi is free and fast, and there's a small business center with a computer in the lobby. The property has four meeting rooms with natural light and simple, elegant decor; there's space for up to 120 people, and rooms suited to weddings and business events.
