Museum Suites

Museum Suites is a sophisticated and stylish property that feels like both a boutique hotel and a small bed-and-breakfast. The hotel offers guests a total of four stunning suites, each named after a different famous Dutch painter. Originally built in 1880s, the historic property is situated in the former home of Bartold Willem Floris van Riemsdijk, the first director of the popular Rijksmuseum. The four-story townhouse features a redbrick facade with beautiful patterned detailing and a black and white pointed roof. Inside, an impressive staircase leads to the first floor's reception area and dining room, with the hotel's four suites sitting on the upper two floors. (Note: There's no elevator.) The common areas are small but stylish. Reception features chandelier lighting, romantic floral wallpaper, and dark wood wainscoting and furniture. Breakfast is served in a dining room that looks like it's part of a luxurious mansion home -- think molded ceilings, elegant gold drapes, and an oval wood table that sits below an elegant chandelier. Near Amsterdam's popular museums and with luxurious, romantic suites, this hotel is a hotspot for couples on a getaway.

Museum Suites is well-situated in a relatively quiet residential area that's still in easy walking distance to cafes, restaurants, and tourist attractions like Vondelpark and the Museum Quarter. The hotel is just a seven-minute walk to the Van Gogh Museum, a 10-minute walk to Rijksmuseum, and just two blocks from Vondelpark (a four-minute walk). Vondelpark is home to bright green parakeets that can often be viewed in the trees at the rear of the building. The location is a bit far from the hustle and bustle of central Amsterdam, though the area is well-connected by public transport, with the nearest light rail station (tram line 2) about a two-minute walk from the hotel. Dam Square and the Anne Frank House can be reached in about 20 minutes via public transport. Schiphol Amsterdam Airport is 35 minutes away via public transport. The spot is easily accessible by car, although street parking can be expensive in this area.

Each of the hotel's four suites are individually styled and decorated in honor of a famous Dutch painter: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, or Mondrian. While decor varies from room to room, it's sophistication and stylish throughout with classic architectural features like ceiling molding, rich wood or parquet floors, chandeliers, and classic wallpapered accent walls. The Mondrian Suite is the most modern, while the Rembrandt Suite has a fireplace and whirlpool tub, and the Van Gogh Suite has a stylish parquet floor and a pleasant private balcony. The Vermeer Suite is apartment-style with separate kitchen and living spaces and a kitchenette. Bathrooms are stylish, modern, and roomy, with heated marble floors, luxurious rainfall showerheads, bathrobes, and individual toiletries. All rooms include sitting areas and work desks in addition to free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with USB connections and DVD players, and iPod docking stations. Rooms also include lightly stocked minibars, tea-making supplies, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Candles and fresh flowers are placed in rooms to greet guests as well.Rear-facing rooms overlook the gardens in the apartments across the way, and tend to be quieter than street-facing rooms. Beds in all of the suites are two twin beds next to each other, which may be a downside for those on a romantic getaway. An extra bed in the suite can be added upon request.

Museum Suites has few extra property features other than a classy dining room that serves up a satisfying breakfast, though it costs an extra fee. Breakfast can also be delivered via room service. Guests can play the piano in the dining room upon request. But there's no on-site restaurant or bar serving other meals or snacks during the day. Airport shuttle service and laundry/dry cleaning service are available, and the front desk is open 24-hours. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
