Hotel Wilhelmina

Hotel Wilhelmina is geared toward tourists on a budget who just want a place to stay for a few nights. Its brown-brick exterior is missing the ornate flourishes of other historical buildings, and the interiors are also fairly simple. A curved wooden desk, wooden floors, and a couple of bronze chairs for seating make up the lobby. There’s some brochures and free juice available for guests. The hotel has a narrow set of stairs and no elevator. The breakfast room is a bit dated but adds some color to the place with tan walls, a green-and-yellow strip around the walls, wooden floors, and tables with white tablecloths and small floral arrangements. It overlooks a terrace, which adds some welcome light to the scene -- the view is especially lovely in spring and summer, when plants and flowers are in bloom. Still, none of the public spaces invite lingering.

Hotel Wilhelmina is located in the Willemspark neighborhood, a six-minute walk to Vondelpark. Several museums, such as the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Stedelijk, are about a 15- to 22-minute walk from the hotel. Though the neighborhood is mostly filled with houses and offices, there are some restaurants and cafes in the area. The city center can be reached in about 25 minutes by public transportation. There’s a tram stop that’s a minutes’ walk away and a bus stop that takes four minutes to reach. It’s a 15-minute drive to Schipol Airport. 

Hotel Wilhelmina's 25 rooms vary in size – from Triple Rooms with three beds to Single Rooms with one, but most are small and cramped with little space between the beds and the walls. Still, these tiny rooms are brightened considerably by wallpaper in a bold geometric or floral print and large windows. A dark-brown color scheme, including padded headboards and carpeted floors, is offset by clean white-linen bedding. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, though the signal is at times spotty.  Safes are provided for a fee. Bathrooms vary a bit in size and style but lack counterspace, and the showers aren’t separated and tend to dampen the rest of the bathroom. Basic toiletries in wall dispensers are provided, along with hairdryers. Be aware that rooms lack air-conditioning.

Hotel Wilhelmina has the limited amenities that generally come with a value hotel. A breakfast buffet of cheeses, meats, cereals, eggs, yogurt, and coffee is included in the rates, but take note that the serving times for breakfast are limited. The lobby sells sodas and water, and luggage storage is provided for a fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Bikes can be rented to explore the city.
