Bottom Line

Named for its address, the upscale Hotel JL No76 sits in a prime location on a quiet, leafy street in the Museum Quarter, within walking distance of museums, Vondelpark, and the inner Canal Ring. Its 39 elegant rooms feature modern amenities such as Nespresso coffeemakers. Bathrooms have custom rainfall shower/tub combos with built-in TVs above the bathtub. Guests can serve themselves refreshments at the cool honesty bar, and a buffet breakfast is available for a fee, but the restaurant's regular menu is limited. The No76 is a sister hotel of the larger Hotel Vondel on the other side of the park, and it has equally appealing rooms.

Scene

Sophisticated boutique hotel housed in 18th-century townhouses

The JL No 76 is housed in 18th-century townhouses that were converted into a boutique hotel in 2011. The interiors combine a modern palette of slate walls and white accents with oriental floor rugs, colorful prints, and quirky contemporary art. The effect is cozy but sharp, with the occasional whimsical note throughout the lobby, such as sculptures of helmet-clad dogs doing their business. Guests are primarily well-heeled tourists and business travelers, and while children are allowed, the overall vibe is more adult than kiddy.

Location

Walking distance to museums and nightlife

Hotel JL No76 is in the Museum Quarter, one block from the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum and two blocks west of the Rijksmuseum. The location is well serviced by public transportation, with tram and bus stops along the major streets at either end of the block for access to the rest of the city. Leidseplein -- known for its nightlife -- is less than a 15-minute walk away, and the leafy Vondelpark is less than a 10-minute stroll from the hotel. The Anne Frank House and Westerkerk are both around a 20-minute walk to the north, and Dam Square is about the same distance away, but to the northeast. Schiphol Amsterdam Airport is under 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Modern rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers; snazzy bathrooms with flat-screen TVs

The 39 guest rooms are painted a range of colors from teal to dark slate-gray. Light gray carpets show visible wear that's offset by ornate oriental runner rugs. Posh COCO-Mat beds come in king or twin sizes surrounded by high-backed chairs and writing desks. All rooms have flat-screen TVs set in colorful wall panels, DVD players, Nespresso coffeemakers, kettles, and minibars. The ultra chic bathrooms have hairdryers, toiletries, shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads, and small flat-screen TVs built into tiled walls at one end of the tubs. Some Executive Rooms have walk-in rainfall showers with separate jetted tubs.

Features

Garden patio, honesty bar, and small restaurant with breakfast buffet served late

The hotel features a modern outdoor deck with a pair of long communal tables that's surrounded by hedges and flower boxes. It's relatively small, but it's a great place to have a drink from the hotel's convenient honesty bar or take breakfast on a sunny day. Restaurant JAN serves a buffet breakfast until late, with a typical spread of fruit, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals and pastries, as well as hot dishes such as omelets and pancakes to order. But breakfast isn't included in the room rate. The menu for lunch and dinner is limited to a handful of seasonal options, but cuisine spans the globe from rabbit and chestnut stews to merguez sausage with couscous. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and there are bicycle rentals available on-site.
