Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hotel Aalders, located in Amsterdam's Museum Quarter, is within a five-minute walk from Vondelpark and a 16-minute drive from Amsterdam Centraal, Amsterdam's largest railway station. The 28 rooms are split between two 20th century properties with authentic historic decor including intricate ceilings and an ornate wooden staircase, though some rooms are small. A free buffet breakfast is available daily for guests and there's an intimate on-site bar. Elevator access is available, an uncommon feature in properties of this era. There is no on-site parking, no air-conditioning, and no minibar facilities in guest rooms. As an alternative, Ibis Amsterdam Centre, another three-pearl option, is adjacent to Amsterdam Centraal.

Scene

A family-run business with historic character and personable charm

Hotel Aalders is a family-friendly, historic hotel that's been handed down through generations of the Aalders family since 1955. The hotel sits proudly on a quiet leafy street and is split across two buildings, with architectural features dating back to the early 20th century. The breakfast room is decorated in hues of pink, with character-filled features like painted wooden picture rails, a decorative ceiling, and an ornate chandelier. The quaint hotel bar is charming, with parquet wooden flooring, and brown velvet chairs. The hotel is well located for business travelers and tourists alike.

Location

Art enthusiasts are a three-minute walk from Amsterdam's Museumplein

Hotel Aalders is located on a quiet leafy street, in the picturesque and affluent Museum Quarter. For antique collectors and art gallery enthusiasts street shopping on Spiegelkwartier is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Business travelers are a 12-minute drive from the RAI Convention Centre, and a nine-minute drive from Amsterdam's World Trade Center. Guests can take advantage of the hotel's bike rental service to join the locals in biking around Vondelpark, a one-minute bike ride from the hotel. For nightlife, the lively Leidseplein can be reached in an eight-minute walk from the hotel; it's host to the Holland Casino, and an assortment of bars and clubs that are buzzing into the wee morning hours. Rooms

A mishmash of rooms to accommodate all guest types

Hotel Aalders is designed to accommodate a range of travelers, with an assortment of room configurations including Single, Twin, Double, Triple, and Family Rooms, with optional additions such as cots for children, that can be arranged via the hotel reception for a fee. Some rooms are a tight squeeze. Room decor is varied throughout the hotel, the Triple Room maintains some historic features from the buildings conception such as wood paneling and ceiling moldings. Other rooms are stark in contrast, with bland white walls and cherry-red carpet. Bathrooms are clean and contemporary, though some are small, and outfitted with a mixture of shower/ tub combos or single shower stalls. There are no minibar facilities in rooms or air-conditioning. Ground floor guests have rooms with French doors that open out onto a large garden at the rear of the hotel, which they can exclusively access. All rooms include free Wi-Fi and satellite channels on flat-screen TVs. Unlike most boutique hotels of this age, elevator access is available.

Features

Free breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi

As this is a smaller, historical hotel, features are limited. There's a free computer workstation with printing facilities available in the on-site bar and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. All guests receive a free buffet breakfast, consisting of croissants, hard boiled eggs, cheese, meats, and coffee, which is served daily in the breakfast room. Parking is not available.
