The design-focused 256-room Artemis Hotel Amsterdam is located on the western outskirts of Amsterdam in a quiet business district. The interiors are striking, from an impressive lobby space with a big mural to tasteful contemporary rooms with lovely bathrooms. There is an appealing restaurant with an art-inspired menu and a waterfront terrace. Wi-Fi is free and the location is convenient for the Amsterdam Airport, but tourist attractions in Amsterdam center are far away. The similarly priced citizenM is another option for a design hotel.
Scene
Smart, design-led hotel with artistic vibe
Housed in a large, modern, and unremarkable structure surrounded by office buildings, the Artemis Hotel Amsterdam makes little impression from the outside. Once in, however, its bright, airy atrium provides a pleasant change of scene to one of clever design, smart funky furnishings, and artistic flourishes. Beyond the sleek, dark-wood paneled reception, long L-shaped sofas share a spacious bar area with bright contemporary armchairs and long-hanging ceiling lamps. A themed and regularly updated art exhibition continues to set the tone, which is also used as inspiration for the menu in the smart, clean-lined adjacent restaurant.
Location
Easy access from the airport but a trek into Amsterdam's center
Located in a business park on the western fringes of Amsterdam, the Artemis Hotel is some distance from the tourist attractions of the Dutch capital. The nearest public transport is a 15-minute walk away (it's then a 25-minute tram journey to Centraal Station) so visitors are largely reliant on the row of taxis stationed outside the hotel. The location does provide easy access to Schiphol airport -- it's just 10 minutes by car -- and the De Oeverlanden nature and recreational area is a short walk away.
Rooms
Muted natural tones and modern Dutch design
The hotel's 256 rooms all have large floor to ceiling windows providing plenty of natural light during the day, and adjustable reading lights and soft-toned lamps for nighttime. Decor is finished in muted natural tones, with warm wooden flooring and modern Dutch-design furnishings. In-room technology includes free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, while modern black-tiled bathrooms come with hairdryers.
Features
Art-inspired menu and waterfront terrace
The hotel's De Stijl Restaurant-Bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in swish contemporary surrounds and extends outside to an extensive waterfront terrace area with heating and parasols, depending on the weather. The menu is inspired by the theme of the art exhibition, which changes every three months. Eleven multifunctional and fully-equipped meeting rooms are available for up to 230 people, and Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout. Parking is available under the hotel for guests arriving by car. There is a small, bright fitness center.
