Bottom Line

The 14-room family-run Clemens Hotel is a charming boutique mid-range property housed in a late 19th-century building in the heart of Amsterdam's downtown area, a short walk to a number of the main tourist attractions. Though the hotel has sparse amenities, there is a sunlit, stylish lobby with lovely balcony and outside seating, as well as an inviting breakfast room where a free continental breakfast is served daily. Rooms are snug, but comfortable and light-filled, and some with beautiful private balconies. A central location and friendly atmosphere makes this a solid choice for tourists, but for something of a similar nature and larger rooms, the Conscious Hotel Museum Square is worth checking out.

Scene

Small boutique hotel in a late 19th-century building with sunlit, high-ceilinged interiors

The wood-floored lobby of this 1895 building is flooded with light streaming through beautiful large windows and features crown-molded high ceilings and elegant leather armchairs clustered around tiny tables. Brass chandeliers and oil paintings in gilded frames in the adjoining breakfast room blend well with simple, modern furnishings, and there's even a lovely large balcony with seating and potted flowers. Owing to traditional architecture, staircases are very steep and might pose problems for some. The atmosphere is friendly, cozy, and peaceful, with cute resident cats milling about the place, and attracts leisure travelers who value this central location that's a short walk away from Dam Square and many other sights.

Location

Centrally located within walking distance of many sights including Dam Square and the Anne Frank House

The Clemens Hotel is situated between two canals on a large historic and busy street that has preserved much of the architecture from its construction in the late 19th century. Its central location in the heart of downtown Amsterdam is close to many popular tourist sights, including the Anne Frank House, which is two blocks away, as well as the Royal Palace and Dam Square, both a seven-minute walk from the hotel. The property is also close to a hop-on hop-off bus stop as well as canal boat stops. There are bus and tram stops serving several lines right down the street from the hotel. Schiphol Airport is an 18-minute drive away, or approximately 45 minutes to an hour via public transportation.

Rooms

Small rooms with simple, stylish decor in a gray, black, and white color scheme

The rooms at the Clemens Hotel are small and can be quite cramped with multiple people, but are sunny and stylish, with large windows and a minimalist decor scheme that features neutral grays and blacks offset by crisp white walls and bedding. Black wooden headboards and writing desks are complemented by decorative gray pillows festooned with subtle floral prints with matching bedspreads. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, electronic safes, telephones, and mini-fridges, but lack coffee- and tea-making facilities. Tiny modern bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers and ceramic sinks with limited counter space.

Features

Lovely lobby with coffee machine, mini library, and large balcony, plus free continental breakfast served in the breakfast room

The hotel has a lovely lobby with a large balcony that offers seating with a view of the busy street below. There is a coffee machine as well as a well-stocked fridge full of soft drinks and snacks available for purchase in the lobby, where guests can also find an extensive number of sightseeing brochures and guides as well as a selection of books in various languages. Free continental breakfast is served in a large sunlit breakfast room. Other freebies include a welcome drink upon arrival and Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
