The 122-room boutique Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is a hip, luxe, "art hotel" with design by Dutch art director Marcel Wanders. The hotel sits in a quiet area between the picturesque Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals, and brings Dutch history and culture inside with its design and architectural choices. Guests are not nickel-and-dimed but benefit from free happy hour and minibar offerings in awesome modern surroundings. Add in the gourmet Bluespoon restaurant, and the Andaz Amsterdam is a destination in itself.
Scene
Quirky cool vibe, gorgeous garden, and creative design
The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht consists of two former Dutch canal houses, one of which used to be a public library. That's what inspired designer Marcel Wanders to use literary references in the hotel's decor, often drawing from historic books about Amsterdam and Dutch culture. Everywhere guests can find quirky, cool details such as wooden shoes nailed to the walls, along with grand artistic statements like the three gigantic bell chandeliers that hang over the deconstructed front desk. Delft blue runs throughout the hotel, from restroom wallpaper to restaurant ceilings and bar room rugs. The chic Bluespoon restaurant is done in Dutch blues and dark woods, with vibrant pops of crimson and greenhouse-style windows that offer gorgeous views of the landscaped garden with its funky statuary and graphic wall murals. Stairways are startlingly red.The hotel offers a free wine happy hour in the aptly named library bar. Everywhere can be found unexpected humorous touches: huge shouting prince statues nod to the Prinsengracht canal, and rooms have photographs of stitched together half fish/half spoon creatures. The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is a visual feast for the modern art lover, and comfortable, to boot.
Location
In the heart of the canal zone, accessible to everything
The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is ideally located in the heart of the canal belt for tourists who want to walk to Amsterdam's museum district, nightlife lovers who want to party on the Leidseplein, and business travelers who need access to the city's commercial area. It's a half mile to the Anne Frank House and the Flower Market. The hotel is quiet, surrounded by canal houses, charming bridges, and cobblestoned streets, but all forms of public transportation are within a five-minute walk. Cars can actually be a hindrance here, where streets are narrow, confusing, and one-way.
Rooms
Fun and creative, with great showers and free minibars
Rooms at the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht are hip, weird, and creative, with large wall photos of hybrid fish, or rather, fish crossed with spoons. Bathroom sinks -- some of them in a blue and white painterly ceramic -- are in the bedroom areas, with separate (rainfall) showers and WCs. Minibar water, soda, and snacks are free and restocked daily, as is the Nespresso machine in each room. Bathrooms have cool wallpaper with articles and drawings from Amsterdam's history. Guests may want to request a room with a canal view; interior rooms look over the atrium and don't get natural light.
Features
