The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht consists of two former Dutch canal houses, one of which used to be a public library. That's what inspired designer Marcel Wanders to use literary references in the hotel's decor, often drawing from historic books about Amsterdam and Dutch culture. Everywhere guests can find quirky, cool details such as wooden shoes nailed to the walls, along with grand artistic statements like the three gigantic bell chandeliers that hang over the deconstructed front desk. Delft blue runs throughout the hotel, from restroom wallpaper to restaurant ceilings and bar room rugs. The chic Bluespoon restaurant is done in Dutch blues and dark woods, with vibrant pops of crimson and greenhouse-style windows that offer gorgeous views of the landscaped garden with its funky statuary and graphic wall murals. Stairways are startlingly red.The hotel offers a free wine happy hour in the aptly named library bar. Everywhere can be found unexpected humorous touches: huge shouting prince statues nod to the Prinsengracht canal, and rooms have photographs of stitched together half fish/half spoon creatures. It's a half mile to the Anne Frank House and the Flower Market. The hotel is quiet, surrounded by canal houses, charming bridges, and cobblestoned streets, but all forms of public transportation are within a five-minute walk. Cars can actually be a hindrance here, where streets are narrow, confusing, and one-way.

Guests may want to request a room with a canal view; interior rooms look over the atrium and don't get natural light.
