Bottom Line

Amigo Budget Hostel is not smack in Amsterdam's city center nor within walking distance to major sights. But it is well-connected to public transportation -- trams stop outside the hotel, and Muiderpoort train station is a short walk away. Its 19 rooms, which range from singles to eight-bed dorms, show a bit more style and character than most hostel digs. Some have en-suite bathrooms and full-size refrigerators, and all include flat-screen TVs. But soundproofing is poor, and guests have complained about cleanliness and the permeating smell of cigarette smoke. Be aware that there's no breakfast service, and padlocks for the dorm lockers and towels come with fees. There's also a surcharge for paying by credit card. Budget-minded travelers could also consider the more centrally located Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, which has an on-site restaurant and includes breakfast in its rates.

Scene

Renovated and redecorated hostel taking a thoughtful approach to style and design

Amigo Budget Hostel occupies a four-story red brick building with sash windows located on a busy commercial street. The hostel, sandwiched between two storefronts, is reached via a narrow flight of stairs. Hallways are slim, and walls are sponge-painted in gray streaks, giving them a stylish look. There's a pleasant lounge area with a wide window, where guests can buy snacks and relax with soft drinks and coffee. The hostel is popular with young budget travelers touring the city with friends. The atmosphere is noisy and busy, with many guests coming and going at all times.

Location

On a busy, commercial street outside the city center

Amigo Budget Hostel is located on busy Linnaeusstraat, which has many shops, cafes, and restaurants, although it's outside Amsterdam's city center. Most tourist attractions are at least a 15-minute trip away by public transportation, but the area has excellent transportation links, including trams, trains, and the metro. - 15 minutes to Rembrandt House Museum by public transportation

  • 16 minutes to Dam Square by public transportation
  • 17 minutes to the Flower Market by public transportation
  • 18 minutes to the Royal Palace by public transportation
  • 19 minutes to Heineken Experience by public transportation
  • 20 minutes to Central Station (train and metro) by public transportation
  • 23 minutes to Vondel Park by public transportation
  • 25 minutes to Van Gogh Museum by public transportation
  • 27 minutes to Anne Frank House by public transportation
  • 29 minutes to Jordaan district by public transportation
  • 36 minutes to Schiphol Airport by public transportation (25-minute drive)

Rooms

Singles, Doubles, and dorm rooms that sleep up to eight; some with full-refrigerators

The 19 rooms at Amigo Budget Hostel are notch above typical hostel rooms in style and decor. The walls and wooden floors are sponge painted in a gray-streak pattern, which gives the small spaces a stylish look, though it can read as austere. Rooms are small and cramped, with low ceilings -- there's not much extra space to store luggage and personal belongings. Twin Rooms have barely a foot of space between the beds. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, but furniture is sparse: Single and Double Rooms have single beds only, while the dorm rooms (sleeping up to eight) have metal bunk beds, as well as coat stands, small desks and stools, and lockers, but renting a padlock comes with a fee. Some rooms have private bathrooms and full-size refrigerators. Soundproofing is poor, and noise travels from the hallways and adjacent rooms. Guests have also complained about the smell of cigarette smoke, which wafts in from the lounge.Rooms with shared hall bathrooms include sinks. But the number of toilets and showers falls short, with only one shower and two toilets per floor. Bathrooms look renovated, although the sinks have scratches and damaged grout, and guests have complained about their cleanliness, empty soap dispensers, and lack of toilet paper. As in many hostels, towels come with a fee, but all bathrooms have hairdryers. While Wi-Fi is free throughout the hostel, it's turned off at night.

Features

Snack bar, guest fridge, microwave, computer, free Wi-Fi -- but no breakfast service

This hostel has some extras, but unlike comparable properties, it does not provide breakfast, although snacks and drinks, along with a few souvenirs, can be purchased in the lounge/reception area. There's a communal refrigerator for guests' use, along with a microwave, and a computer connected to the internet in the lounge. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hostel, but it's disabled at night.
