Built in 2001, this hotel is located within easy walking distance the historic downtown area. Decor is less chain-like than one might expect from a Hampton Inn, and rooms have kitchenettes or kitchens and lots of space. There's also a pool with a deck area that receives plenty of sun, fitness center with limited equipment, business center, and small parking lot.
Scene
Chain hotel with surprisingly colorful exteriors and cute common areas
The Hampton Inn is housed in a colorful salmon-hued building connected to a row of similarly colorful four-story structures. In the lobby, there's a curving staircase (hailing from an old church in Jacksonville), a cozy nook with plush seating, and a fireplace with an adjacent coffee stand. The ceiling has a built-in clock feature with a few small fresco paintings. When compared to this grand main room, the plain carpeted hallways look drab and in need of an update.
Location
In the historic district, with easy access to restaurants and shops
The Hampton Inn is located in the historic district of Fernandina Beach, between South Front Street and South 2nd Street, with a view out on the Fernandina Beach Marina. The area has plenty of shops and restaurants -- Le Clos and Espana both get particularly good reviews. There are also boat charters and rentals across the street and Centre Street, lined with quaint shops and galleries, is just around the corner. The Silk Stocking District is four blocks away and is home to a number of restored Victorian mansions and cottages. It's a 10- to 15-minute drive to the beach.
Rooms
Kitchens or kitchenettes are included; thin walls allow sounds from trains and neighbors to enter
Rooms are clean and spacious at the Hampton Inn, but walls are thin and noise from nearby rooms (and from a train that passes a couple of times a day) can be problematic. Decor is classic, with a mix of off-white and beige walls, wrought-iron or wooden beds with sapphire-blue runners, and big bathrooms with long counters, shower/tub combos, and Neutrogena toiletries. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Suites include separate living areas and bedrooms, plus kitchens and dining tables. Rooms facing S Front Street have views of the harbor.
Features
Gym, business center, free breakfast, and upper pool deck with lounge chairs
The hotel features a pool with lounge chairs, but it's a bit small, especially considering that the property is on the opposite side of the island from the beach. The hotel also offers a free and varied breakfast every morning with some hot items, and guests in a rush can request an On-the-Go breakfast bag from the front desk. A few types of coffee are available in the lobby throughout the day. The hotel also has four small meeting spaces and a business center with a computer and a printer. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there's a limited amount of free parking on a first-come, first-served basis. There's also a coin-operated laundry room for guest use.
