Bottom Line

Hotel Savoia is a mid-range property that has been managed by the same family for the past three generations. The hotel is conveniently located on a central main road, making it reachable by car -- rare for Positano. The 39 elegant guest rooms are tastefully decorated, and many of them have balconies or terraces with scenic views of the sea and mountains -- though they lack in-room Wi-Fi. (Wi-Fi is available in the lounge and reception area.) There is no on-site restaurant, but a free breakfast is served, and drinks and light snacks are available from the bar. Room rates are competitive for the location, and the hotel offers excellent value, but travelers could compare prices with the Best Western-affiliated Positano Art Hotel Pasitea.

Scene

Charming Italian villa with brightly colored floor tiles

Hotel Savoia is located on a hillside overlooking the center of Positano, on one of the city's main thoroughfares. The hotel occupies a charming, five-story classical-style villa with a pink facade. Public spaces are spacious and bright, thanks to the large windows offering panoramic views, and the decor is tastefully elegant, with brightly colored majolica floor tiles contrasting beautifully with the white walls, and the attractive oak furniture finished in warm tones. Comfy sofas and armchairs, floor lamps, and potted plants add coziness to the general atmosphere. The hotel draws mainly couples, but families find their way here too.

Location

Located in central Positano on a major thoroughfare with car access

Located in the center of Positano, Hotel Savoia is on one of the town's major thoroughfares, making for easy access via car (a rarity among hotels in the area). Many shops, restaurants, and cafes are within easy walking distance, and it's only a five-minute walk to the beach along a path. It's a 10-minute walk to the Positano ferry terminal, from where there are ferries to Capri (a 50-minute ride), Amalfi (a 20-minute ride), Salerno (a 15-minute ride), Sorrento (a 60-minute ride), and Ischia (a two-hour trip). The closest train station is located in Sorrento, a 40-minute drive away. Other popular tourist destinations include Ravello and Pompei, both a 65-minute drive. Grotta dello Smeraldo, a seaside cave and popular attraction is about a half-hour drive. Naples International Airport is the closest one, and is about an 85-minute drive away.

Rooms

Elegant guest rooms with brightly colored tile floors and scenic views

Most of the 39 guest rooms at Hotel Savoia have balconies or terraces with spectacular views of the sea and surrounding mountains, while others overlook the garden. The decor is elegant and tasteful, with bare white walls and crisp white linens contrasting beautifully with the brightly colored majolica-glazed floor tiles. Furniture, which is painted in white or finished in warm oak tones, lends antique charm. Bathrooms are spacious and also decked out in bright-colored tiles, and come with either shower/tub combos or shower stalls, and bidets. Higher-priced rooms feature luxurious whirlpool bathtubs or spacious showers with rainfall showerheads or sophisticated temperature controls and massage nozzles. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with flat-screen TVs, safes, and hairdryers. Some of the lower-priced rooms can be a bit cramped, and only the higher-priced rooms have minibars, and balconies or terraces large enough for tables and chairs. Triple and Quadruple Rooms are available for families, or friends traveling together.

Features

Free buffet breakfast, bar, lounge, and free Wi-Fi in public areas

On-site features are limited at the Hotel Savoia, but the property does have some extras that add to guests' comfort. A free cold buffet breakfast is served each morning in the large, pleasant, air-conditioned breakfast room with beautiful views of the local landscape. Guests can also take breakfast on the balcony or terrace of their rooms. There's no on-site restaurant, but guests can order drinks from the bar adjacent to the breakfast room, where light snacks, salads, or sandwiches are also available. The lounge on the second floor is a pleasant place to sit and take in the beautiful views, or read a book from the hotel's small collection. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lounge and in the lobby area. There's no on-site parking, but paid parking can be arranged nearby. The front desk staff will help guests arrange car rentals and excursions, as well as airport and railway station transfers. Pets are welcome, and do not require an extra fee.
