This 44-room beach hotel is located in a beautiful spot, with a private beach across the road and a large pretty pool, but the area is a bit deserted. Scene

A well-kept property that's popular with families

The small, white Hotel Olimpico rises above the picturesque Salerno Gulf, along the Pontecagnano coastal road. From the hotel, the views over the sea and the gulf are stunning. The three-story, squarish building sits starkly amid palm trees, manicured shrubs, and blossoming gardens. It's well-maintained and squeaky clean. The simple lobby keeps the all-white theme going, with white tile floors, walls, and modern couches and chairs upholstered in white. Paintings of the Mediterranean seascape hang over the curved desk, and potted plants lend cheer and color. In busy season, the Hotel Olimpico gets crowded with families in tow with kids, but guests report it remains well cared-for and pleasant.

Location

A peaceful, remote spot on the Mediterranean coast

Between the Amalfi and Cilentana coasts, the Olimpico Hotel lies on a quiet stretch of the Mediterranean, away from the touristy buzz of many hotels. It sits on a wide, quiet street, surrounded by palms and gardens. The neighborhood is a bit run-down and deserted, and the Olimpico is not within walking distance of any notable sights, but a free shuttle goes to downtown Salerno, and the airport. The nearest restaurant is a casual pizza place -- about a five-minute drive away. Having a car is advantageous, as parking is free and taxis can get expensive. The Salerno Amalfi Coast Airport is a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Simple, attractive rooms with minibars and free Wi-Fi

The spacious, airy, rooms received makeovers in 2010. They have minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, which sometimes takes awhile to kick in. Large, comfy beds are crafted from cherry wood. Blackout shutters help ensure a good night’s sleep. Rooms facing the pool can be noisy -- those seeking quiet may request rooms in the back of the hotel. Black-and-beige tiled bathrooms are simple but clean and pleasant, with ample toiletries, bidets, and plush towels -- bathrooms in Deluxe Rooms come with hot tubs. Most Standard Rooms have small terraces with plastic tables and chairs -- the terraces of Superior and Deluxe Rooms offer glimpses of the Mediterranean, or overlook the hotel’s courtyard gardens.

Features

Private beach, big pool, free shuttle, free breakfast buffet, restaurant, bar, and more

The Hotel Olimpico’s private beach sets it apart. There are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas from which to relax with the turquoise Salerno sea in the foreground. The hotel’s 65-foot long, curvaceous swimming pool is surrounded by plants and palms, plus there’s a hot tub, and a swimming area (and playground) for kids. A free shuttle goes to and from central Salerno, the train station, and the airport, so getting around is fairly easy. Parking is free. A free breakfast buffet serves eggs, fresh fruit, and veggies, sweet and savory pastries, and crepes. Guests can get snacks, cocktails, and coffee from the bar, or sit down for a meal at the restaurant/pizzeria, which serves traditional Campanian dishes prepared with local produce. If the weather is nice, which it often is, guests can dine al fresco on the open-air terrace. There’s also a playground, tennis courts, and a ping-pong table.
