Located in the popular Amalfi town of Positano, Hotel La Bougainville is a 16-room property close to the town center and within walking distance to the beach. Low on features, but a good base to explore the region from, the hotel is a decent mid-range place to rest your head at night. Rooms are cute and colorful, though the lower-tier units are tiny and have small windows. Each comes with a flat-screen TV, minibar, safe, and hairdryer. Having a car is recommended here, though parking is only available off-site for a hefty fee. Guests wanting somewhere with a little more to offer might look into the Hotel Eden Roc, a three-and-a-half-pearl property in Positano that has a spa and wine-tasting evenings.
Scene
Quaint hotel lacking amenities but a good base to explore the region from
Hotel La Bougainville isn't one to put on airs, but for those seeking a quaint mid-range place to spend the night while exploring the Amalfi Coast, this is a good spot. The hotel is pretty basic throughout and lacks features like a full restaurant, pool, and even top-notch views, but it's less than comparable hotels in the area. It has a charming and cheerful design throughout, with mostly blue-and-cream decor, patterned-tile accents, and framed photos of the region. The lobby is more traditional, while the breakfast room has stylish white parquet flooring, white linen chair covers, and blue glassware. True to its name, vibrant bougainvillea lines the exterior.
Location
Just outside the center of Positano, and an uphill climb from the beach
Located on a charming side street lined with overflowing flower baskets, Hotel La Bougainville is a 12-minute walk (or three-minute drive) from Positano's main piazza and five- to 10-minute uphill walk to the Positano beach. There's a bus stop a five-minute walk from the hotel, and there's plenty and shops and restaurants close by. Guests, especially those coming from the ferry, should know that there's a fairly long and stair-filled climb up to the property, though porter services are available to the nearby piazza. Naples' airport is about three-and-a-half hours by public transit during the day, though it's more convenient to rent a car, especially those arriving later in the day. The car journey from Naples airport to the hotel is a more reasonable hour and a half.
Rooms
Rooms are small but cheery
The hotel's 16 rooms are relatively modern for the area, and although they're on the small side, they're quirky and cheery, with gorgeous tile on the floors and/or in the bathrooms and color schemes in blues or brighter floral hues. White furniture helps to make the space look a little bigger, though Economy and French Rooms feel almost claustrophobic, particularly those that only have a small window high up on the wall. Those wanting lots of natural light should ensure a room with a furnished outdoor space. Note that rooms on the backside of the hotel don't offer a view, though they're quiet. Small flat-screen TVs are mounted on the walls, and wardrobes are fairly well-sized, plus there are well-stocked minibars and safes. Bathrooms come with hairdryers, basic toiletries in standard rooms (nicer ones in upgraded ones), and large walk-in showers.
Features
Low on features, but simple free breakfast
Breakfast, which takes place in a pleasantly blue-and-white dining room, is included in most room rates. The continental Italian fare comes spread out on a big table, and consists of pastries, hard-boiled eggs, meats, fruits, and cheeses. Although a bit simple, most guests give it positive reviews. Unfortunately, that's the only meal served on-site, though ample dining options are within easy walking distance. The hotel also lacks a pool and wellness facilities.Wi-Fi is free and available throughout the property, though reception in some of the rooms can be unreliable. There's no parking on-site, but there is a parking garage and a choice of other parking lots close to the hotel for hefty fees.
