Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Hotel Aurora is a beachfront property overlooking the Amalfi harbor and within walking distance of the city center. Like many waterfront properties, the hotel has whitewashed walls and pretty tile-work in the floors giving it a regional look. The 29 rooms have quaint decor, including wrought-iron headboards and flowery floor tiles. Amenities are limited, and there's no gym or pool. Those looking for a property with more features may want to consider the Excelsior Grand Hotel instead, which has water views as well as a pool and tennis court for a higher room rate.

Scene

Traditional Amalfi-style beachfront hotel with water views

The waterfront Hotel Aurora has a look typical to the Amalfi coast, with whitewashed exteriors and arched doorways. Its lobby continues the airy, coastal look with light-blue tiled floors, white walls, and glass chandeliers. But much of the furniture here feels dated and tired, especially the floral and pale, and rose-colored chairs and blacktop tables in the cafe area, all of which looks grandmotherly. There's a simple garden terrace with a wood-branch trellis frame and white metal furniture, lemon trees, and shrubbery. Most guests are couples on a romantic getaway.

Location

On the Amalfi Coast, within walking distance of town

The Hotel Aurora is next to the Amalfi Port and slightly west of the main part of town. Walking to most of the sights takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The ninth-century Amalfi Cathedral and the adjacent Moorish cloisters of Chiostro del Paradiso are 11 minutes away on foot. The Museo della Carta, dedicated to the art of paper-making, is a six-minute drive away. Outside of town and away from the coast are a few nature reserves such as Valle delle Ferriere, which is 53 minutes away by car. Travelers arriving at Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport should expect the drive to the hotel to take about an hour and 20 minutes.

Rooms

Rooms with attractive tile floors, flat-screen TVs, and coffee/tea facilities; some with terraces

Guest rooms at the Hotel Aurora continue the same airy, Amalfi look from the public spaces, and decor here is a touch more stylish. Furnishings vary, but all rooms have a blue-and-white color scheme and attractively tiled floors. Details like blue armchairs with white piping, orange throw pillows, and medallion desk chairs add a bit of charm. Room categories include Standard Rooms, Standards with Views, Superiors with Terraces, and Deluxe Rooms. Standard Rooms have queen-sized beds and chairs, daybeds, or sofas; they look out on the area behind the hotel that faces the cliffs or trees. Standard Rooms with Views either have windows that look out on the harbor or balconies with seating. Superior Rooms are a little bit larger and add big terraces, while Deluxe Rooms can comfortably sleep three people. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, lightly stocked minibars, electric kettles with coffee/tea supplies, and safes. Bathrooms benefit from more ornate tile, and all have walk-in showers (but no tubs) and bidets. Toiletries, hairdryers, and slippers. Note that the hotel also rents apartments located a short distance from the hotel that come equipped with kitchens and washer/dryers.

Features

Buffet breakfast with baked goods, on-site cafe, and free hotel-wide Wi-Fi

While the Hotel Aurora amenities are on par with those in many other Amalfi hotels, the lack of a pool or fitness center might deter some guests. The breakfast buffet -- which includes homemade cakes, eggs, and pastries -- is served on the garden terrace and gets good reviews overall, but it's not included in all room rates. Light fare and coffee are also available in the hotel's cafe lounge. There's also a small parking lot available for self and valet parking (for a fee). Otherwise, parking in the neighborhood can be tough. Babysitting services can be arranged and cribs are available upon request. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
