The Vila Petra Aparthotel is a mid-range apartment complex set in a quiet neighborhood that's a 10-minute walk from Albufeira's nightlife hub. Its 143 apartments range from studios to two-bedroom units and all have full kitchens and balconies. Interiors are nothing to write home about, and while the rooms are reasonably modern, they are the definition of plain and bathrooms are dated. Facilities are extensive, with two restaurants, three bars, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as some kid-friendly amenities, including ia kids' club and playground. Unfortunately, the beach isn't within walking distance and other guests can be noisy. While rates are certainly competitive, beach-lovers should consider the similarly priced Quinta Pedra dos Bicos, which is close to Praia da Oura -- though cooking facilities are less extensive.
Scene
Simple apartment complex with pretty gardens
An attractive whitewashed facade with gently curved arches and simple columns sets the tone for the unassuming Vila Petra Aparthotel. The reception area mixes crimson furnishings and black marble, while hallways are dotted with chunky antique pieces and gilt-framed mirrors. Beyond the lobby, a bright central atrium combines tropical plants with polished white stone and a water feature, all flooded with natural light from a glass ceiling. It adds a bit of character to an otherwise plain hotel. The grounds are impressive, comprising cobbled footpaths lined with manicured lawns, pretty flowers, and exotic plants. Spread across three buildings, the property might not seem super modern in every corner, but it's all well-kept, especially in an area of town that's filled with frequently dated hotels. The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful, drawing mostly families and couples, though groups of friends -- who are occasionally rowdy -- check in here too.
Location
In a quiet residential neighborhood, a 10-minute walk from The Strip
The hotel is located in a peaceful residential neighborhood in Albufeira's central Sao Joao District. The Strip -- a lively nightlife hub that's packed with restaurants, bars, and nightclubs -- is a 10-minute walk away. While the proximity to nightlife is a major bonus, the beaches aren't within walking distance -- those are a five- to 10-minute drive away depending on the destination. The hotel provides a free shuttle service four times a day to Praia da Oura. Albufeira's pretty white-washed old town is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel, while Faro Airport is a 30- to 40-minute drive.
Rooms
Spotless apartments with full kitchens and furnished balconies
The Vila Petra Aparthotel complex has 143 modern units, including Studios and One- and Two-bedroom Apartments, all with tile floors and fabrics in blue and maroon hues. The look is the definition of plain, and even a bit dorm like, despite being well-kept. The blonde-veneer furniture is simple, and the framed abstract posters on the walls -- while at least adding some color to the spaces -- feel like a cheap attempt to dress everything up. Studio apartments include full separate kitchens with dishwashers, ovens, stove tops, microwaves, kettles, and refrigerators with freezers. Wi-Fi is free -- if shaky -- and standard features in all categories include flat-screen TVs, sofa beds, air-conditioning, and furnished balconies or terraces, although none have sea views. Housekeeping is provided daily. Marble-tile bathrooms look a bit dated and include shower/tub combos with old-school fixtures plus bidets. Hairdryers and basic toiletries are provided. It's worth noting that some guests have complained about hard beds, and noise from fellow hotel guests can travel -- not surprising given this property's proximity to Albufeira's nightlife.
Features
Two restaurants, three bars, and a health club with indoor pool
A breakfast buffet is available each morning in the hotel's Petra Restaurant, which isn't included in the rate -- most guests prefer to buy breakfast items from the on-site mini-market to eat in their apartment. The Xeiros Restaurant also provides both buffet and a la carte options, and three bars include a poolside shack, a snack bar, and a more sophisticated lounge with soft seating. The hotel's main pool is large and lined with loungers, while a second outdoor pool is good for kids. Outdoor pools are unheated, but there's a health club with heated indoor pool and whirlpool tub, along with sauna and steam room, though these services come with a fee. There's also squash and tennis courts, a fitness center, and a playground and a kids' club. A laundry room is a handy addition and there's meeting and event space as well. The hotel's shuttle runs to Praia da Oura four times a day. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
