The Salgados Dunas Suites is an upscale complex characterized by chic, minimalist design set on immaculately landscaped gardens overlooking the dunes of Salgados Beach. The relatively secluded location means there's little within walking distance, except of course a lovely wide stretch of golden sand. Its 155 rooms and suites are spartan yet stylish, with many featuring sea views -- though bathrooms are disappointingly small. There are nine outdoor pools, including three for kids, but they can be chilly in cooler months. A deluxe spa, quality dining, and direct beach access complete an impressive resort. Though, the Vidamar next door provides stiff competition with similar rooms, a heated outdoor pool, and more dining options.
Scene
Smart, minimalist hotel with extensive facilities that appeal to both couples and families
Comprising a string of almost identical minimalist blocks fronted by uniform lines of palm trees, the reception is only noticeable by a row of colorful flags marking its entrance. The smart, modern tone continues inside, with an understated combination of crisp white walls, tan synthetic leather couches, and contemporary artwork above the flickering coals of a long gas-burning fireplace. This upscale property was renovated in 2015, and it certainly shows in the immaculate corridors that lead outside to manicured gardens with circular swimming pools, olive trees, and mature palms. A wood-planked footpath connects to the adjacent golden beach. Part of this resort is also located across the (practically traffic-free) road, where a restaurant, spa, and rooftop bar are situated. Clientele is an even split between couples of all ages and families with kids.
Location
Backing onto the dunes of Salgados Beach, west of Albufeira
The hotel is situated right on the dunes of Salgados Beach and part of an extensive, modern development located about midway between the Algarve resort towns of Armacao de Pera and Albufeira. Apart from the lovely stretch of beach that's a minutes' walk from the hotel, there's very little in the immediate surrounds besides other hotels. There are a cluster of restaurants toward the end of the nearby Praia da Gale Oeste, about five minutes away by car (or a 20-minute walk). The 18-hole Salgados Golf Course is also a short four-minute drive away, as is birdwatching at the Salgados Lagoon. For those who fancy some nightlife, Albufeira is about a 20-minute drive from the property. Faro Airport is located about 40 minutes away.
Rooms
Brigh, contemporary rooms -- many with sea-view balconies -- but small bathrooms
Decor in the hotel's 155 bright rooms and suites is much like the lobby, with a chic, minimalist vibe that includes light tones, simple wooden furnishings, and modern art. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, safes, and flat-screen TVs with a decent amount of satellite channels (including some for kids); suites add bathrobes and tea/coffee facilities, plus kitchenettes in larger ones. All rooms have glass doors that slide open to furnished terraces or balconies, many with views overlooking the gardens and sea beyond. Modern bathrooms have walk-in showers, but they're small -- even in the suites -- and lack bathtubs. Quality toiletries, bidets and wall-mounted hairdryers are standard.
Features
Nine outdoor pools, kids' club, chic spa, and two restaurants and bars
An outstanding buffet breakfast is included in the rate and served in the hotel's Bossa Nova Restaurant. The eatery also serves a buffet-style lunch and dinner buffets, and it has an outdoor terrace with plenty of seating. A la carte dining is available at the hotel's upscale L14 restaurant in the building opposite, which also houses the rooftop Liquid Lounge offering cocktails and fantastic sunset views. The Jazz Bar in the lobby features live music typically from June to September. An impressive nine outdoor pools (three for children) are found dotted throughout the grounds, though they're unheated and can be chilly when temperatures aren't at their highest. The swish L14 Spa does offer a small heated indoor pool, as well as whirlpool tub, steam bath, and sauna, however entry is not free. As well as splash pools, children have use of a seasonal kids' club offering various activities and entertainment. On-site parking is free of charge, as is Wi-Fi throughout the property.
