Bottom Line

The 217-room Pine Cliffs Hotel is a beautiful cliffside resort offering armloads of amenities and spectacular ocean views. Formerly the Sheraton Algarve, this five-pearl hilltop palazzo blends contemporary comfort with Old World details, thanks to a top-to-bottom renovation of rooms and public spaces. Elegant rooms and suites feature spacious modern bathrooms (some with soaking tubs) and furnished terraces overlooking the ocean or lush grounds. Multiple dining options include an outdoor Champagne bar and chic health food spot. And while six pools, elevator beach access, a nine-hole golf course, tennis, and a gleaming new spa are choice perks, there's an added price tag for just about everything, including breakfast and in-room Wi-Fi. Consider checking out the beachfront EPIC SANA Algarve Hotel, which includes free Wi-Fi at similar rates.

Scene

Renovated luxury resort set on a lush golf course overlooking the ocean

Set atop more than 160 acres of tree-lined fairways and lush gardens, the hotel greets guests with sweeping vistas of the sandstone cliffs and deep blue ocean below. Inside its whitewashed Moorish-style exterior, curved archways rise above a pristine lobby with inlaid marble floors and dark wood accents. Ornate blue-and-white Portuguese signs contrast with clean-lined linen sofas and chairs in taupe and dusty rose. Regal red velvet sofas and overstuffed club chairs fill the den-like lobby bar, which is accented by a billiards table and imposing mahogany bar capped at one end by an antique ship's prow. The nautical theme continues in the Corda Cafe, where massive iron chains and decorative stacked crates evoke the hold of a cargo ship. Thanks to its long list of amenities, this luxury resort draws a mix of older couples and young families, as well as golf aficionados and corporate groups.

Location

Stunning cliff-top location above Portugal's longest beach, a 20-minute drive from big city Albufeira

This hilltop resort in the Algarve's Faro District overlooks Praia da Falésia, Portugal's longest beach. There are several restaurants and cafes within a five-minute drive in the nearby village of Olhos de Água. Big city shopping, dining, and nightlife is about 20 minutes away by car in Albufeira. The nearest airport, Faro International, is around 30 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Bright, updated rooms with spacious bathrooms and furnished balconies

The Pine Cliffs Hotel's 217 updated rooms are spacious and inviting, combining Old World elements with contemporary furnishings in neutral tones. Expect to see terra-cotta tile floors and crisp, white bedding accented with ornate tile headboards. All rooms include flat-screen LCD TVs and coffeemakers. Wi-Fi access is available for an extra fee. Glass doors slide open to furnished balconies overlooking the ocean or resort grounds. Stylish tiled bathrooms -- some with marble tubs -- feature walk-in rainfall showers, bathrobes and slippers, and upscale toiletries.

Guests can work out or take a fitness class at the newly redesigned Pine Cliffs Goes Active health club, then treat themselves to a massage or wellness treatment at the Serenity Spa, a stunning new facility that includes a steam room, sauna, and whirlpools.
