Pestana Alvor Atlantico

Pestana Alvor Atlantico is a large apartment-style hotel that's a popular pick for self-sufficient travelers who want to be near the beach. The look here is relatively modern, if not exactly memorable. Upon stepping inside, windows let in lots of daylight throughout the lobby, and there's a collection of sofas and chairs scattered around. The only other communal area at the hotel is the indoor pool, which is also a nice bright space and has a contemporary finish, with checkered floor tiles and stonework. With the check-in desk at neighboring sister hotel and few on-site features, the hotel has a low-key atmosphere. The apartments mostly attract families, though couples of all ages looking for a laid-back beach holiday also pass through the property. 

Pestana Alvor Atlantico is located in a quiet spot just south of the charming town of Alvor. There are a handful of minimarts, shops, and restaurants in the area, plus a bowling alley, and the vast sandy beach is a five-minute walk. It's a five-minute drive to Alvor proper, which has lots of charming boutiques, shady castle ruins, and tasty restaurants. Buses connect from stops along the main road outside the hotel, Rua da Torralta, taking about 10-15 minutes. Buses also leave from the same road to beaches east of the resort, such as lively Praia da Rocha, and to Portimao. Trips in that direction by bus take about 20 to 30 minutes, or 10 to 15 minutes by car. Faro Airport is a one-hour drive east of the hotel, while the airport in Lisbon is a two-and-a-half-hour drive away.

Apartments have modern, fresh decor, with wood-laminate flooring plus a white and gray color scheme brightened with touches of natural green. They're simple, to be sure, but get the job done for no-fuss travelers. All feature balconies -- some with sea views -- as well as kitchenettes with stovetops, sinks, small fridges, microwaves, toasters, kettles, and coffeemakers. Dining space includes either tables or breakfast bars. Sofabeds in the living areas are useful for families. Expect air-conditioning, safes, flat-screen TVs, daily housekeeping, and free Wi-Fi in all units. Configurations include Studios, Superior Studios -- which offer a lot more living space -- and One-Bedroom Apartments. Penthouses add large wrap-around balconies with superb ocean views, larger living areas, and extra amenities like irons. Bathrooms are finished with a similar modern style and colors, with gray and white tiling plus shower/tub combos. Basic toiletries and towels are provided.

Pestana Alvor Atlantico has limited facilities on-site, but there's a pleasant indoor pool and sun room with loungers. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. There's also a self-service laundry room. Additionally, guests are permitted to use all of the facilities at sister hotel Pestana Dom Joao II next door. There, you'll find nice gardens with loungers, a saltwater pool, and a separate kids' pool. The large bar has a stage with evening entertainment and a pool table, and the buffet restaurant serves food all day. A spa at that property offers treatments, a whirlpool, and steam room, plus another indoor pool and a gym with cardio and weight equipment. The kids' club there features a playroom with art equipment and toys, and the resort also has outdoor table tennis and mini-golf. Electric or traditional bicycles can be hired.
