Pedras da Rainha is a mid-range apartment and villa complex located in east Algarve's small resort of Cabanas. While it's certainly not somewhere to visit for nightlife, the village has a pleasant, laid-back feel with plenty of dining options and a lovely long sandy beach that's a short boat ride away. The 100-odd units are mostly cheerful and bright, though some could use a makeover, and come with cooking amenities and outdoor space. A good-size pool, two eateries, and a range of sports facilities add up to a good option for a range of guests. Compare prices with the nearby Cabanas Park Resort, which adds spa facilities and river views.
Scene
Peaceful, though dated, villa complex with relaxed village-style atmosphere
An unassuming low-rise block with whitewashed walls and traditional tile roof serves as the reception building for the Pedras da Rainha. Inside, chunky wood furniture, crimson seating, and terra-cotta tiling create a welcoming, yet rather dated feel that typifies much of this resort. The complex is composed of numerous similarly whitewashed, terra-cotta-topped bungalows and villas scattered around swathes of pleasant green space. Cobblestone and gravel footpaths lined with well-tended lawns connect the various sections of the village-like property. While the atmosphere is serene, friendly, and relaxed, parts are starting to show its age and could use a refresh. The hotel is mostly popular with the over-50 crowd, including many guests who return year after year. While British tourists make up the bulk of the clientele, the property also draws lots of Portuguese vacationers. Open all year, it is also attracts longer-term visitors over the low season when rates drop considerably.
Location
Set in quiet resort village with easy access to beach, bars, and dining
The complex is located on the outskirts of the small and sleepy village of Cabanas in the quieter eastern side of the Portuguese Algarve. Most of the resort is focused on a stretch of bars, restaurants, and cafes that line the waterfront promenade, less than a 10-minute walk away. From here, guests can take a short water taxi (free to guests) to the Ria Formosa nature park and its lovely long stretch of sandy beach -- Praia de Cabanas. Just outside the property a bus stop connects to the charming town of Tavira in around 15 minutes. There are also a couple of supermarkets within five minutes' walk. Most travelers arrive at Faro Airport, which is around a 45-minute drive.
Rooms
Air-conditioned, and with good cooking facilities and lots of outdoor space
Units include Studio and One-Bedroom Apartments (sleeping between two and four guests) and Two-, Three-, and Four-Bedroom Villas (sleeping up to groups of 10). While some units have been more recently renovated and finished in bright, modern decor with whitewashed walls and pretty traditional touches, others feel tired and even gloomy. All open to furnished terraces overlooking the gardens or pool. Larger Villas feature rooftop patios. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs (with a single English-speaking news channel), and cooking facilities such as fridges, electronic burners, ovens, microwaves, kettles, toasters, and cookware. Bathrooms are old-fashioned with shower/tub combos (covered by fabric curtains), bidets, and basic toiletries. Guests need to supply their own hairdryers and there's no Wi-Fi.
