The Aparthotel Oceanus is a large apartment-style hotel aimed at the budget end of the Algarve vacation market. Its 102 air-conditioned apartments, consisting of studios and one-bedroom units, are spread over two buildings and include simple kitchens and balconies and bland decor. Bathrooms are well-finished, though, but don't come with many toiletries. The range of on-site facilities is solid, with both an outdoor and indoor pool, a kids' pool, several bars (one poolside), and a restaurant. The lobby and the decor in some areas looks dated, and some apartments can be noisy, but for its proximity to a lovely beach, it's a pretty good value.
Scene
No-frills ambiance aimed at the budget-conscious traveler
Built in 1997 and expanded and renovated in 2006, the Aparthotel Oceanus is a modern(ish) resort hotel spread across two four-story buildings and surrounded by similar properties. A plastic awning portico leads guests into a lobby area, with an undulating patterned floor, potted plants, and a trio of tired-looking sofas. With plain decor and a general no-frills ambiance -- which extends to unattractive hallways -- not a great deal of emphasis has been placed on the interiors. Clientele tends to be budget-conscious families who appreciate the range of facilities, in-room kitchenettes, and low prices, and are willing to overlook the overall tired feel.
Location
Set in the Algarve resort of Olhos d'Agua on the Albufeira to Vilamoura road
The Oceanus is located in the Algarve resort of Olhos d'Agua, west of the popular holiday spot of Albufeira and on the Albufeira to Vilamoura road. The golden sands of Olhos d'Aqua Beach and Maria Luisa are both within a 10-minute walk of the hotel, while the surrounding area is full of quaint cobbled streets, bars, and restaurants. The nearest airport is Faro, about a 35-minute drive away.
Rooms
Simple, traditionally styled apartments with kitchenettes
Simply decorated apartments, which inlcude studios and one-bedroom units, are traditionally styled with ceramic tile floors and wooden furnishings, and little else -- tiny mattresses are topped with striped bedspreads and walls are basically bare. All apartments include kitchenettes with mini-fridges, electric burners, microwaves, toasters, and kettles. Most have furnished balconies. The modern bathrooms have walk-in showers and wall-mounted hairdryers but offer little in the way of toiletries and a relatively small. Air-conditioning comes as a standard amenity, as do small flat-screen TVs. In-room safes and Wi-Fi are also available for a fee.
Features
Indoor and outdoor pools with poolside snack bar and kids' pool
The Oceanus has both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a separate kids' pool. The main outdoor pools are across the road from the hotel but do include plenty of sun loungers and a poolside snack bar. The cheery A Cantina restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while the Nautilus Bar, which has a pool table, serves evening drinks with bar games. A rooftop terrace has loungers and views over the sea and surrounding area, though there might be prettier places to unwind at resorts that are closer to the sand.
