Bottom Line

The Homewood Suites, one of several mid-range chain hotels near the airport, has attractive decor throughout and a number of freebies, including a hot breakfast, self-parking, and shuttle service. Rooms have kitchenettes with fridges, microwaves, stovetops, and sinks, and many rooms have separate living rooms -- all of which helps explain this property's slightly higher price point. There's also an outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi, open seasonally. The nearby Holiday Inn Express Suites and Hyatt Place Albuquerque Airport both have contemporary decor and (usually) lower rates, but neither have rooms with full kitchenettes, and the Hyatt Place lacks a Jacuzzi.

Scene

An attractive mid-range hotel near the airport with a heated pool and free hot breakfast

This mid-range chain hotel in the airport area offers attractive decor and a complete range of free amenities -- including breakfast shuttle service, and self-parking. Other nearby hotels offer that as well, but at a lower price point -- namely, the equally handsome Hyatt Place Albuquerque Airport and Holiday Inn Express Suites. But Homewood Suites stands out for its huge rooms with full kitchenettes, and (in many room categories) separate living rooms. The attractive lobby has a fireplace, high ceilings, chandeliers, dark woods, and many paintings from local artists. Rooms are also modern and clean, and all have spacious sitting areas (many have separate living rooms) as well as dining areas and kitchenettes. The free hot breakfast served in the dining room includes eggs and fresh fruit. Outside, there’s a heated pool and Jacuzzi (open seasonally) along with a barbecue grill and tables, and a basketball court. The fitness center is small, with three machines and a set of free weights.

Location

One mile from the Albuquerque Airport, off of I-25

The Homewood Suites is one mile from the airport and next to I-25. A free shuttle transports guests to and from the airport, and anywhere else within a five-mile radius. The immediate area is an “airport hotel row,” so options are limited for walkers, but Old Town, the downtown area, and Uptown are easily within the shuttle’s range.Sitting along the Rio Grande at an elevation of 5,312 feet, Albuquerque occupies a high-desert environment. The city was founded in 1706 by the Spanish as a colonial outpost in the New World. Today, Albuquerque is home to more than 530,000 people of more than 70 different ethnicities, including Native Americans, Latinos, and Anglos, making it the largest city in New Mexico. Albuquerque retains connections to the past and its culture in the architecture, artwork, and cuisine found throughout the city.Less known to some, Albuquerque is also a center of high-tech industry and research. The Sandia National Laboratory, General Electric, and Kirtland Air Force Base all call the city home. It's also the ballooning capital of the world. Albuquerque hosts the International Balloon Fiesta each October, an event that is arguably one of the most photographed in the world. Local hot air balloon companies offer rides to visitors year round. As a four-season city with 300 sunny days a year, Albuquerque has an active community of golfers, hikers, skiers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and fishermen. The Sandia Mountains to the east provide a high-altitude respite from the summer heat and many miles of forested trails, and a winter playground featuring Sandia Peak Ski Area. Any visit to Albuquerque is incomplete without a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, the longest tram in the world, ascending 2.7 miles from the outskirts of the city to the Sandia Mountains at 10,378 feet.Whatever you do in the outdoors here, be sure to stay well-hydrated -- mild temperatures can be deceiving, and the high elevation can take its toll even on the fittest adventurers.- 5-minute drive from Albuquerque International Airport

Rooms

Huge rooms with kitchenettes and, in many, separate living rooms

The Homewood Suites features big rooms with kitchenettes and chain-like but pleasant decor. Framed prints, a tan-and-black color scheme, wood and carpeted floors, and dark wood furniture strike a modern look. Even the smallest room type (Studio) has a dining table and a work desk, and the desk has extra outlets.Kitchenettes include stoves, sinks, microwaves, fridges, dishwashers, and utensils, so it's possible for guests to cook a real meal. Sitting areas have pull-out sofas, and in many room categories they're fully separated from the bedroom. Granite counters, shower/tub combos, and Neutrogena toiletries are standard in the bathrooms.- Kitchenettes with stoves, sinks, microwaves, fridges, dishwashers, tableware, and coffeemakers
