Streamlined, minimalist furnishings set off by a few stripes and geometric patterns carry through the common spaces and into the 144 rooms and suites. Eighty-two units come with full kitchens, a bonus for those who prefer to self cater. A mini-market area in the lobby can supply quick snacks, while the bar serves slightly more substantial bites. Active guests will appreciate having multiple options for a workout including a heated indoor pool and a solid gym, while bike lanes just outside the building run north to downtown, where entertainment options are far greater. Those that aren't biking can reach downtown in a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute bus ride. Travelers who prefer being in the thick of downtown's attractions may prefer the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel.

Opened in 2017 in a new-construction building, the Hyatt House Anchorage retains a certain freshness and streamlined modern design that veers toward boutique. While the sleek glass-and-brick exterior feels fairly corporate, interiors open out to a spacious lobby done up in cream and charcoal-gray hues that enhance their breezy feeling. Strategically placed splashes of color in the upholstery, carpeting, and artwork add just the right touch of turquoise, orange, and yellow to brighten things up. The style has hints of mid-century modern with low-slung couches, Danish armchairs, and a chrome coffee table. Throughout, Eames-style molded seats are paired with blond-wood tables, giving loads of room to lounge. The public computer stations, mini-market, and lobby bar here give even more reason to linger, and the bar tends to collect guests throughout the day (especially as there's no full restaurant to be found elsewhere). Guests are predominantly families and business travelers, and the latter can also make use of an on-site meeting room with all the tech bells and whistles.

South of downtown, within a short drive of airport
Commerce is the primary goal of the Midtown District of Anchorage, where Hyatt House is located, which makes it convenient for business travelers. Another boon for those traveling for work: Ted Stevens Airport is just a nine-minute drive away. (The hotel provides free airport-shuttle service.) On the downside, this location limits the entertainment, arts, and culture nearby, which can be found more readily in downtown or the adjacent Spenard neighborhood. Thankfully, a coffee house can be found a block away, and several restaurants are all within a five-minute drive. Still, those looking to reach downtown will need to rely on a car, taxi, or the city’s “People Mover” bus system, which has a stop six minutes from the hotel by foot, on Arctic Boulevard. (Be warned that the bus can double travel times.) The Hyatt House aims for a home-away-from-home feeling, albeit one that reflects a polished, stylish look. Decor continues the streamlined, modern approach of public spaces, but here furnishings take on more sober hues of beige, brown, and gray in solid, straight lines. Artwork and a few stray throw pillows provide a few hits of color. Plush platform beds done up in crisp white sheets, modular gray furniture, and boxy couches and ottomans anchor the room. Eighty-two units out of the 144 offer full kitchens—including stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers—and living room areas. But even entry-level rooms come with microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Other standard amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, blackout drapes/curtains, safes, iron/ironing boards, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms also reflect a simple, modern design, with spacious walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. All are equipped with hairdryers, and individual toiletries. Note that the rooms that face the street are prone to noise, so light sleepers should request a room set away from the roadway.

The philosophy behind the Hyatt House brand is to make guests feel like residents within an apartment complex. And the features certainly reflect that. While it's missing a full restaurant, the hotel does have a mini-market on the premises (helpful for stocking in-room kitchens) and a bar serving tacos, sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as wine, beer, and spirits. It also serves a free breakfast that past guests rate well; the spread includes a chef-helmed omelet-making station as well. The property's indoor pool isn't very large, but it offers a warm spot to take a dip surrounded by pool loungers and tall windows. Guests can also workout in the Hyatt's gym, a sunny space outfitted with treadmills, ehlipticals, free weights, and other equipment. A meeting room and a business center caters to the hotels many business guests. Other freebies include Wi-Fi, on-site parking (which includes spaces for RVs and trucks), and airport shuttle service.
