Bottom Line
The 10-room Kalani Hawaii Private Lodging is a hostel with a bed-and-breakfast vibe, thanks to owners Maria and Bernie, the latter of whom is a former Triple Crown of Surfing contest director. All of the rooms, both private or dorm-style, are uniquely decorated; some are more modern than others. The grounds are small but pretty and the beaches of North Shore, known for excellent surfing, are just across the street. It's a good spot for surfers who don't need many amenities and plan to head out to the beach each day, but it's a bit isolated for visitors who want to focus on Honolulu area attractions.

Situated against a grassy cliff, this quaint and cozy hostel provides a tropical setting in a quiet part of the North Shore. It's a low-key spot with a similarly calm vibe, very much in the Hawaiian spirit. The entrance is gated and surveillance cameras are set up throughout the indoor and outdoor common areas. The grounds are nicely landscaped and have various seating areas and a couple of hammocks. Most guests are surfers taking advantage of the North Shore beaches across the street.

In a rural area across from stellar North Shore beaches
The Kalani Hawaii Private Lodging is in Oahu's North Shore area, against a cliff of the Pupukea Mountain. It's across from Rocky Point and close to Sunset Beach, at an ideal location for surfers wanting to take advantage of the area's legendary winter waves. In addition to the beaches, there are many hiking and biking trails in the surrounding area. The hostel is an hour or so drive to Honolulu, so it's best suited for travelers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The closest airport is in Honolulu, and the hostel can arrange airport transfers (for a fee). Haleiwa Town, which has a number of dining and shopping options, is a 15-minute drive away.
Rooms
10 uniquely decorated rooms, both private and dorm-style
The hostel has two houses available for groups, as well as two studios and a mix of six private and shared rooms. The Pacific Studio is a large two-bedroom with separate living and dining room areas; classic wooden furniture, a large armoire, piano, and unique decor including masks and surfboard clocks are spread throughout. It also has its own fully-equipped kitchen with an oven, a stove, and a full-size refrigerator. The other rooms are brightly painted and have comfortable bedding, flat-screen TVs, and a homey, cozy ambiance. There are two dorm rooms with bunk beds and colorful sheets. One of the two common bathrooms has an outdoor shower; expect cheesy beach-inspired decor such as surfboard shower curtains.
Features
Common kitchen area and free use of surfboards and boogie boards
Typical of a hostel, the amenities are few, but there are a couple of thoughtful touches. The hostel provides surfboards and boogie boards for guests to borrow, free of charge. There's also a well-stocked kitchen and grill area for guests to use and plenty of travel books. Coin-operated laundry is available and the hostel provides guests with free Wi-Fi and cable TV.
