Sole East Resort

Montauk, Long Island, New York, United States

This summer hot spot is the essence of cool, but with zero pretension. Though not directly on the beach, the converted Tudor-style property has expansive grounds that include a large heated pool with food and drink service, lawn games, daybeds, bamboo walkways, shady hammocks, fire pits, and an organic restaurant and bar. (Plus, it's just a three-minute bike ride to the beach, and the hotel has cruisers available to rent.) The decor of the 61 rooms and suites is modern beach-chic with a light surfer theme thrown in for good measure.

2

Capri

Southampton, Long Island, New York, United States

Only open from May through September, this 24-room boutique hotel draws a see-and-be-seen summer crowd. Live DJs spin Friday and Saturday nights, while at other times, lounge music is piped in by the pool and fire pits. Landscaped paths lead to BLT Steak restaurant and an outdoor bar where you can order specialty cocktails (note that it's a long walk to the other restaurants -- and shops -- of Southampton, and getting to the beach requires a car). The rooms, which lack TV and phones, have modern beachy decor, Red Flower beauty products, and free San Pellegrino Limonatas, Acqua Pannas, and Perriers.

The Montauk Beach House

Montauk, Long Island, New York, United States

Two outdoor pools and a large sun terrace form the central hub of this 33-room boutique hotel --  this is where guests congregate not only to swim and sunbathe, but also to mingle and kick up their heels during the Saturday night pool parties featuring a live DJ. The trendy guest rooms, all with large windows and balconies, can only be described as beach-house shabby-chic (think wide-plank wood floors, high-beamed ceilings, wrought-iron beds, Edison lamps, and clawfoot bathtubs). Though it doesn’t have a beachside location, the exclusive-yet-playful place is within walking distance to Montauk town center and the beach.
